How To Motivate Students

The two main types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, both affect the learning process. Intrinsic motivation derives from an inherent interest in that which is being taught, extrinsic motivation refers to influences externally.

While some students have their own intrinsic motivation or external motivation, other students need to be motivated to learn. Teachers can employ a range of methods so as to motivate students. Below are some strategies and tactics that may motivate students and stimulate them to learn.

- Provide a supportive environment and build a trusting bond by being friendly with students, getting to know them and showing a genuine concern about them as individuals.

- Highlight the links between effort and outcome.

- Regularly give them reminders that learning is something that requires patience, and that tangible benefits may take time to see.

- Divide the process of learning into manageable pieces for students to take in.

- Minimize students performance anxiety during learning activities.

- Try and make sure that activities given provide a reasonable challenge to the students. They must not be either too easy or too difficult.

- Weak students are used to experiencing failure so they should be helped to feel success on a more regular basis.

- Learners are more likely to be motivated when they appreciate the worth of the classroom activities, and if they consider that they will succeed if they apply a reasonable amount of effort.

The attitude of the teacher is also key in relation to motivating students. Attitude applies to everything that a teacher says or does in class. It concerns a teachers understanding, awareness and approach.

Teacher’s should develop an action plan in terms of how they relate to their students. This must be realistic, measurable, and flexible. Whilst it is helpful to write this down, the most important thing is to at least know it for themselves; whichever, they should be sure to adhere to it.
