Home schooling your children? How integrated is art in your curriculum?
By adding art to your daily lesson plans and curriculum you will be ensured of the best education for your children
When I say good art I am not talking about the standard traditional arts and crafts that is done in so many preschool and kindergarten classrooms all over the world. If you are doing Kids Crafts then hopefully you are already doing crafts with your kids that does not make them into robots.
It is because so many teachers in the early childhood and elementary school do not understand art and it’s importance, that it gets interperted as crafts and copycat crafts to boot.
But this can’t be what you want. If your children are not in typical, traditional classroom settings I am sure it’s because you know that you can give them more through home schooling
You wouldn’t want your children to turn into robots right? And if you knew that following cookie cutter instructions when making projects would do that, you not want that, correct?
What I’m really talking about here is not only good crafts for kids but real art that often gets lost in the shuffle.
That’s too bad because art adds such depth to any curriculum that it would be a crying shame as you are at home and are able to give such great activities to your children .
Art is enjoyable and creative. Aside from that there are real skills that are learned through art and I would like to share 5 of them with you
1. Art will help build physical coordination- Art is good for both gross motor coordination AND fine motor coordination. When children use their arms they are getting gross motor skills, as they do in painting in coloring. They will use more fine motor skills when cutting and drawing.
2. Emotional development is addressed-. When a sibling is jealous of another as in the classic case of a new baby in the family, a great release of this jealousy can take place while pounding clay and coloring real hard. It is a great solace to have art to work through many difficult traumas in a young child’s life. Deaths, fires and even robberies can all be confronted though children’s art
3. Intellectual development can be tied in- Children learn to make sense of their world as they use art to count, classify, sort, make their own decisions and learn to follow directions without doing cookie cutter art.
4. Creativity is tremedously affected-Of course children’s creativity takes a flying leap if they are allowed to do art that allows them to create at their own level, which allows them to be creative in more ways than one
5. Integrating curriculum happens naturally- And last but not least art in a home schooling curriculum can help integrate the curriculum and help them learn. As children learn best through their five senses a great way to get their curriculum to stick with them would be to integrate art into their learning.
