Butterfly Kits: Witness One Of Natures Most Spectacular Transformations
Butterfly kits make for a great science project to teach your kids about nature. This is a wonderful way to watch one of nature’s most spectacular transformations up close.
The butterfly kits should be made of fine, transparent mesh netting with at least one zipper door. You need to be able to access the caterpillars to feed them and to finally release them. This lets you see butterfly metamorphosis up close. Ideally the habitat should be both free-standing and able to be hung. It is also collapsible which makes for easy storage. The cages can be reused year after year. Complete instructions are included. Also included is enough food to keep the caterpillars healthy until they spin their way into a chrysalis. All you need to supply is sugar and water.
Butterfly larvae gets shipped to your house. There are usually three to five caterpillars that you can watch transform into painted lady butterflies. Just lift the garden cover and release these spectacular specimens into your yard.

The metamorphosis takes about three weeks. Children can watch the larvae get bigger, form chrysalides and then watch them emerge into painted lady butterflies. Leave the caterpillars in their cup and watch them form their chrysalises. When they start to hang from the top in a ‘J’ shape you know they are about to make a chrysalis. Transfer them to the cage by removing the paper and safety-pinning the discs to the inside of the mesh.
If your timing is right, you can watch the butterflies emerge from the chrysalises after about a week. You can observe them for a couple of days but then they should be released. Be sure butterfly kits are on your list of must do projects with your kids.
